Making a Great First Impression When Selling Your Home

You’ve probably heard this bit of advice a lot throughout your life: first impressions are powerful, so be sure to make a great one. The same advice rings true when you’re trying to sell your home.

You want people to be wowed as soon as they pull up to your home (be sure to read our article about improving your home’s curb appeal!), and to have a great impression the moment they walk through the front door.

If your home has an entry hall, be sure to take time to make it look great. Your prospective buyers may only be in the area for a few seconds, but the proper style can set the tone for the rest of the tour.

Think about hotel entrances. A small, nice round central table is a great place to put some flowers, or some kind of nice house plant.

Utilize what little space you have. While most entryways are small in square feet, you likely have quite a bit of wall space to work with.

Take advantage of this space with wall-mounted shelves and picture ledges. Generally the rule of thumb is to start from 3 feet above the floor up to within about 2 feet of the ceiling. Mirrors in eye-catching frames can help open up smaller entryways and make them feel more spacious.

Use the flip-flop paint technique. Swap the ceiling and wall colors from a visible nearby room when painting your entryway. Be sure to keep the trim color consistent for visual continuity.

Just utilizing these few simple tricks can help make a great first impression for those that walk through your door.

Many people neglect their entryway, but spending some time and attention can help create a great first impression, which may help close the deal.
